Since 1994, a group of volunteers and myself have been traveling to Central America to provide emergency dental care to the poor. Our group was founded by Dr. Amil Shapka in St. Paul, Alberta.

For the last 18 years, I have been a part of an annual dental mission to provide basic services to the campesinos of Honduras and Guatemala. Now incorporated as the "Kindness In Action Society," we are a non-profit group of concerned individuals, motivated by a belief in the dignity of all people and their right to basic human needs, and desire to help those with less, in the developing world.

Volunteers are from across Canada and the U.S.A. work without compensation, and are responsible for their own expenses, including airfare and accommodation. Through their kindness, and the support of many others, we are able to help approximately 600 people at each project, performing basic examination and simple restorations. In 1995 we were proud to successfully place 15 complete dentures, the first ever in the region. As well, the first year alone our group of 7 dentists and 13 auxiliaries performed approximately 1200 extractions and 500 fillings, and 3 school visits in five days. And yet, we were unable to see all who came. For this region (EL Paraiso), our visit was their second opportunity in a year to receive any kind of dental care. Despite the long days and harsh conditions (no power or water) our entire team felt we received more than we gave. The sincerity, warmth and gratitude of the people has touched and changed us all, inspiring us to return.

We are encouraged by the progress we see, and the difference we feel we are making. What started as an idea over a cup of tea at a kitchen table, had become 2 groups of over twenty volunteers each in 1996 and over 90 strong providing 4 weeks of dental treatment in Honduras and Guatemala in 1999. This year we will be traveling to 3 countries with over 160 volunteers. Our vision has blossomed from one of pain control, to actively working towards training local people and establishing a community based clinic, a seed of self sufficiency for the people.

Our total budget for the services related supplies is approximately $65, 000. We are inviting individuals, businesses and organizations to participate and share in an indirect but important way. By contributing whatever you might be able to towards the expenses needed to provide services to these people, or through gifts of supplies, you can become part of this giving experience. I became a part of this because I know and can assure you that 100% of your donation goes to purchasing supplies or equipment.
